History of Northern Cyprus

🌍 North Cyprus Guide

Northern Cyprus has a long and layered history shaped by geography, trade, religion, conflict and cultural exchange. Because Cyprus sits in the Eastern Mediterranean between Europe, Anatolia and the Middle East, many civilizations have left their mark on the island.

Today, visitors can see this history in ancient ruins, castles, mosques, churches, monasteries, city walls, museums and traditional towns.

Ancient Cyprus

Human settlement in Cyprus dates back thousands of years. Over time, the island became important because of its location, natural resources and sea routes. Copper, timber and trade helped Cyprus become connected with the wider ancient Mediterranean world.

In Northern Cyprus, ancient sites such as Salamis, Soli and Vouni help visitors understand the island’s early importance.

Roman and Early Christian Period

Cyprus became part of the Roman world in the first century BC. During the Roman period, cities, theatres, baths, roads and public buildings developed across the island.

Christianity also became important in Cyprus during the early centuries AD. Archaeological remains such as basilicas and mosaics can still be seen at sites including Soli and Salamis.

Byzantine Period

After the Roman Empire was divided, Cyprus became part of the Byzantine world. This period influenced the island’s religious architecture, fortifications and cultural life.

Kyrenia Castle has Byzantine origins, and many churches, icons and religious traditions across Cyprus reflect the Byzantine period.

Lusignan Rule

In the medieval period, Cyprus came under Lusignan rule after the Crusades. This era left a strong architectural legacy, especially in castles, abbeys and Gothic-style buildings.

Important Lusignan and medieval sites in Northern Cyprus include:

Famagusta became a wealthy and important port during this period.

Venetian Period

The Venetians controlled Cyprus after the Lusignan era and strengthened many fortifications because of the island’s strategic location. They expanded and reinforced city walls, especially in Nicosia and Famagusta.

Venetian architecture and defensive planning remain visible in the walled cities and castles of Northern Cyprus.

Ottoman Period

The Ottoman Empire took control of Cyprus in 1571. The Ottoman period shaped the island’s religious, architectural and social life. Mosques, hammams, inns, fountains and traditional houses became part of the built environment.

Important Ottoman-era heritage in Northern Cyprus includes:

The Turkish Cypriot community’s cultural identity is strongly connected with this period.

British Period

Britain took over administration of Cyprus in 1878, and Cyprus later became a British colony. The British period influenced law, administration, education, infrastructure and road systems.

One lasting practical legacy is left-side driving, still used across the island today.

Modern History and Division

Cyprus became an independent republic in 1960. In the following decades, political tensions and intercommunal conflict affected the island deeply. In 1974, after a coup backed by supporters of union with Greece, Turkey intervened militarily. Since then, Cyprus has remained divided between the north and south.

In 1983, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was declared. It is recognised only by Turkey internationally. The Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, while the island remains politically divided.

Visitors should approach modern history with sensitivity because it is still personal and political for many people on both sides.
