Driving in North Cyprus is generally straightforward and enjoyable for most international visitors, particularly on the main intercity highways. The primary routes connecting Ercan Airport, Lefkoşa, Kyrenia, Famagusta, and Iskele are easy to navigate. However, before you hit the road, there are a few important local rules and differences you should know.
🚗 The Most Important Rule: Drive on the Left!
Traffic in North Cyprus flows on the left side of the road. Because of this, all rental vehicles — including ours — are right-hand drive. This may feel unfamiliar at first, but most drivers adapt within a very short time. If you are visiting for the first time, take your first drive slowly to give yourself time to adjust safely.
Speed Limits in North Cyprus
- Urban areas (towns & villages): 50 km/h
- Outside built-up areas: 65–80 km/h (follow posted signs)
- Dual carriageways & main highways: 100 km/h
📷 Speed cameras: Fixed speed cameras are installed at various locations across North Cyprus. Fines issued during the rental period are the sole financial responsibility of the driver named on the agreement.
Practical Tips for a Safe Journey
- Roundabouts & Junctions: Be extra cautious at roundabouts, turns, and junctions. Always check both directions thoroughly before entering any road.
- Mountain & Village Roads: While intercity highways are modern and well-maintained, some mountain and rural village roads can be narrow. Drive with extra care on scenic routes.
- Alcohol Limit: The legal BAC limit is 0.05% for regular drivers. However, we strongly advise a zero-alcohol approach while driving any of our vehicles.
- Seat Belts: Mandatory for all passengers at all times.
- Mobile Phones: Using a phone while driving is prohibited unless hands-free.
⚠️ Important: All speed camera fines, parking tickets, and traffic penalties received during your rental period are the sole financial responsibility of the driver named on the agreement.
Why We Recommend Automatic Cars
Automatic rental cars are highly popular among our visitors — and for good reason. If you are not completely used to right-hand-drive vehicles, choosing an automatic transmission is a smart and convenient option. It allows you to focus fully on the road and comfortably adjust to left-side traffic, without the added distraction of managing manual gear changes.
All vehicles in the Niz Rent A Car fleet are automatic — Nissan March, Mazda Demio, Nissan Note, and Suzuki Solio — starting from just £25/day.
